Review: Hunted by Kevin Hearne

Hunted by Kevin Hearne

Tuesday I downloaded my preordered copy of Hunted by Kevin Hearne, Book #6 of the Iron Druid Chronicles and started reading. Several hours later I came up for air and a glass of water and let my heart slow down a bit. What I thought was going to be the end of the Ragnorak cycle turned into just another rousing chapter in the life of Atticus, Granuaile, and Oberon, albeit with some significant changes.

This time the three are racing across Europe, trying to avoid Loki, a pair of Huntresses on chariots, vampires, and an unknown enemy that may or may not be Fae. Lots of running, narrow escapes, and good humor abound, as well as plenty of happy nerdy references.

An enjoyable read and highly recommended if you like urban fantasy told with an eye to nerdy cultural references. It’s a bit more out there then The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher but in a tongue-in-cheek style I have come to enjoy. The author is having fun and we can go along for the ride.

SPOILER ALERT!

There was one significant change that tripped me up several times, and that was swapping the main character’s point of view from Atticus to Granuaile at several critical points. It was always disconcerting to me when it happened as I was normally several paragraphs into the new POV before I realized it had changed. I need to go back and reread those chapters again to see it it was simply me reading too fast to notice or if the clues weren’t sufficient in the opening paragraphs to alert me. In either case its obvious Kevin has many more stories to tell and that some of them will include Granuaile on her own without Atticus around. Also, several foreshadowing that point to future directions the series could take.

Other Readings of the Week

Got into a Louis L’Amour kick again this week and read several Sackett novels, including: The DaybreakersThe Sackets, and The Sackett Brand. Also read Abaddon’s Gate, Book #3 of the Expanse series by James S.A. Corey.
