The End of Days

Awoke yesterday with the idea for a short story based on the end of the solar system, when all the hydrogen in the Sun is burned out and it expands into a red giant that might engulf the Earth. Not really sure where the idea came from as I’ve mainly been trying to resolve some plot issues with the rewrite of An Empire Forgotten, but it grabbed my attention.

The Sun as a red giant. Much like my short story The Missing Wizard, this new one arrives almost full blown in my mind. I thought I was dreaming at first, but the story kept expanding in my head until the thought finally hit me, “hey dummy, here’s an idea for you.” So I sat and wrote down as many significant plot and story ideas as I could remember before they dissipated from my head. Now I’ve got plenty of research to do as well to get the setting correct, and lots of details to explore.

The one thing that worries me is the tone of the story. By it’s very nature this story should probably be told in a more stylized manner than I normally write. Getting the voice correct will be a major effort on my part. But hey, no guts, no glory, as they say.
