Built for Murder Cover Reveal

Cover Reveal: Built for Murder

Here it is, in all it’s glory, the custom cover I commissioned for the first Erich Ramble’s mystery novel.

The process itself was dead simple.

I started by researching mystery covers for the genres I was going to place the book in. I went to the Amazon Kindle store’s mystery section and looked at the top hundred covers for mysteries, thrillers, and others to see what elements were common in the best selling covers. Once I knew that I could move on.

I then went to a place called 99Designs and started searching for designers. There I had two choices, option number 1 is to run a contest for several designers, choose a winning design and work with the designer to finalize it. I liked the idea of a contest but chose option number two instead.

In option number two, I looked over the work of several designers and chose one directly which produced work that best matched the cover style I was looking for. Near the top of the list I found designer L1Graphics. I sent them the background information they needed to start the cover based on my research and waited.

The initial cover was everything I could have hoped for albeit a bit heavy on red, which I thought was too bloody for the novel itself. People get killed but in more tasteful ways. Worked with L1Graphics on color changes and ended up with the perfect cover. It really reflects the Austin area, my idea of Erich, and the tone I wanted the cover to have. It should also look right at home in the popular ebook lists should it make it that far.

Thx to L1Graphics at 99Designs for their great work, cooperative attitude, and fast turnaround. I will definitely be using them in future projects.

So, what do you think? Does it work for you?

It Lives (Storms that is)

Just finished the first rewrite of Storms on an Opal Sea. After 6 years it can finally move on and take its place among my short story collection. Will be sending it out for reading feedback soon, then onto an editing phase. With any luck we can publish it in May 2019.

In other news I plan to reveal the new cover for Built for Murder soon. Got some minor changes to make on text placement and it’ll be ready. Am targeting mid-April for the reveal in hopes it coincides with placing the ebook on Amazon for pre-orders, yet another first.

Am still plotting out Festival of Murder and hope to finalize that soon so I can continue writing it. Got the major plot threads in mind, now it’s a matter of weaving them together into the best story I can. Up until now I’ve mainly been a discovery writer, writing things in sequence with maybe knowing one or two scenes I wanted to include, then linking them together. For efficiency though I really want to make all the major decisions first, then fill in the story based on a fluid outline.

Anyway, its only Tuesday and I already feel successful. w00t!

Storms Still Alive

Finally making some headway on finishing my short story Storms on an Opal Sea, possibly the oldest idea in my to-do projects folder. Creativity and energy have been radiating out of me so I’ve been jumping from project to project and making progress on them all.

Yesterday I got the initial draft cover for Built for Murder to review, which I did, and then sent back suggestions to more closely align with my ideal concept. I loved the composition, the title font, and the images used. I expect to see the final draft RSN and start thinking about promotions for the release.

Am really making an investment in this release, far above what it costs in time or money for one of my short stories, but I think it’s worth the attempt. We’ll know in a few weeks when we release it.

And We’re Finished!

Just a short note to say I’ve completed the final editing pass on Built for Murder. Yippee!

Still awaiting final review comments but I’m really feeling good about the upcoming release.

Today I plan to work on the second Ramble’s mystery tentatively titled Festival of Murder, I’ve already got the first 3rd written in draft, so its time to plan it out so I have a better idea of where I’m going with the story.
