Progress Report and Weird Al Yankovic

So, it’s been a couple of weeks since my last report so its time to update you again. If you pay attention to the progress indicator you’ll see we’re almost a quarter of the way to our word count goal of 110,000 words. So far, the writing is going well, the plots are getting more interesting as I write them and I’ve got another three chapters in various stages of progress.

So, you may be asking yourself, Frank, why are you working on three different chapters at once? Maybe you should, you know, work on one until its done, then the next, and so on. My answer is if I was using a single viewpoint in the story, and only following a single plot, then writing my chapters sequentially would make a lot of sense. Unfortunately I’m not doing that. I’m following multiple viewpoints, each with their own plot, and those appear in different chapters due to how they fall out temporally in the story. As such, it’s easy to jump around as my interest takes me from plot to plot. Today, for example, chapter 8 is nearly done as it’s plot has received a lot of attention this week, while the next chapter in line, number 7 is less than 20% done. So work is progressing well, just in an unordered fashion.

Actually, at the speed this novel is progressing I’m wondering if I might complete it by the end of the year instead of the projected March 2012 deadline. Lot’s of travel in the coming months and a new employer may slow my progress down, but I’m crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. Sooner is always better, but as long as I meet my self-imposed deadline I’ll be happy. Considering a year ago I hadn’t written a complete  fiction novel before, to be so far along in my second one is just amazing.

Weird Al – The Alpocalypse Tour

By happy coincidence a coworker told me on Wednesday that Weird Al Yankovic would be in town at the Moody Theater for a show. Weird Al has always been one of my favorite musicians, ever since I first heard his rendition of Another One Rides the Bus on the Dr. Demento show while stationed in California in the late 70’s. Currently, his latest album spoofs songs by Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and several other musical artists, as well as Al’s own songs and the ever present and wonderful polka medley.

For those of you that are aware, Austin considers itself the Live Music Capital of the World and the Moody Theater is where the PBS show Austin City Limits is filmed. This will be my first foray into that venue after 15 years of living in Austin. Not sure why I haven’t visited there before but I expect to have a great time as I got a great seat and know the crowd will be wildly enthusiastic.

Later everyone, w00t!
